I don't think this has an awful lot to do with the limitations of 2D graphics - even if you could rotate this scene 360 degrees, you wouldn't be able to see a gap. Can you hold your ground against the scrambled kingdoms of Iberia? The game should count that as a finished wall - it's not unfinished as there's no gap to fill I'm also sure this never happened in the original Age of Empires 2.
